Process Control Engineering & Automation
Process control and instrumentation systems form the core of modern LNG plant automation. Thus enabling safe, reliable, and efficient operation of complex cryogenic processes.
These systems range from individual package unit controls using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) through to fully integrated plant-wide automation platforms such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), including Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD).
Together, they provide the monitoring, control, and protection layers necessary to manage critical LNG process operations. Effective automation begins with a strong understanding of the underlying process.

Our services combine process engineering expertise with advanced control system knowledge to design, review, and optimise automation strategies that support both operational performance and safety objectives.
We assist with the development of sophisticated control schemes, system integration, functional verification, and performance assessment to ensure control strategies deliver their intended process and economic outcomes. This capability extends from high-level control philosophy and system architecture through to detailed instrumentation, field devices, and measurement systems that underpin reliable plant operation.
Cryogenic & Cold Section Expertise
The cryogenic section forms the core of every LNG facility, where natural gas is progressively cooled and condensed into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) through highly integrated refrigeration and heat exchange processes. This critical part of the plant includes major process systems such as large refrigeration compressors, compressor–expander arrangements, cryogenic fractionation systems, and high-efficiency heat exchange equipment including Main Cryogenic Heat Exchangers (MCHE) and Brazed Aluminium Exchangers (BAX). These systems operate at extremely low temperatures and tight process tolerances, requiring precise engineering design, control, and operational discipline.

- Main Cryogenic Heat Exchangers (MCHE)
-
- Cold boxes and cryogenic piping systems
-
- Brazed Aluminum Heat Exchangers (BAHE)
-
- Cold commissioning, cooldown, and startup
Within the cryogenic refrigeration cycle lies a range of specialised equipment and control systems that directly influence plant capacity and efficiency. These include large centrifugal compressors with associated anti-surge and capacity control systems, Joule-Thomson (JT) valves, liquid hydraulic expanders, and associated cryogenic process instrumentation. Our expertise across these systems enables us to support clients through both project development and operational phases, helping ensure the “business end” of the LNG process performs reliably and efficiently.
We work with operators and project teams to optimise cryogenic system performance, maximise net LNG production, and improve overall energy efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Through a combination of detailed process understanding and practical operational insight, we help clients maintain stable cryogenic operation and extract the full value from their LNG liquefaction assets.
Utilities
Utilities systems provide the essential infrastructure that enables LNG facilities to operate safely, reliably, and continuously. While often operating in the background, these systems are fundamental to plant performance—without stable and well-designed utilities, LNG production cannot be sustained. Effective integration of utility systems ensures that process units receive the power, gases, fluids, and supporting services required to maintain steady and efficient plant operation.
-
- Instrument air and plant air systems
-
- Nitrogen generation systems
-
- Steam and boiler systems
-
- Electrical power generation and distribution
-
- Utilities and offsites commissioning
Our services support the full spectrum of LNG utility and offsite systems, including power generation and electrical distribution, compressed and instrument air systems, and air treatment and drying equipment. We also provide expertise in nitrogen generation systems, whether based on membrane technologies or cryogenic cold-box Air Separation Units (ASU), as well as steam generation, steam conditioning, and associated heat recovery systems. In addition, we assist with water treatment and management systems that support cooling, boiler feedwater, and process water requirements.
Through integrated engineering and operational insight, we help ensure these supporting systems deliver the reliability, capacity, and efficiency required for large-scale LNG facilities. Our approach focuses on maintaining robust utility performance, optimising energy usage, and ensuring that the broader LNG plant can operate at its intended production capacity.
Integrated Owner’s Engineer Support
Whether during project development, construction, or operational phases, an experienced Owner’s Engineer provides independent technical oversight to protect the interests of project sponsors, investors, and asset owners. Acting on the client side, the Owner’s Engineer ensures that engineering, procurement, and construction activities align with project objectives, technical standards, and long-term operational requirements. This role helps bridge the gap between project stakeholders, engineering contractors, and plant operators to maintain clarity, quality, and accountability throughout the project lifecycle.
-
- Independent design and technical reviews
-
- Interface coordination with marine LNG systems
-
- EPC and contractor technical oversight
-
- Constructability and commissioning readiness
Our Integrated Owner’s Engineer services span the full range of LNG disciplines, providing pragmatic technical support where and when it is needed most. We assist clients by supplementing internal teams when resources are constrained, or by providing independent third-party expertise to review designs, assess technical decisions, and address complex engineering or operational challenges as they arise.
By working alongside project teams, operators, and EPC contractors, we provide experienced guidance that helps maintain project momentum while safeguarding technical integrity and commercial outcomes. Our approach focuses on supporting existing teams with seasoned LNG specialists who can quickly engage, resolve issues, and help deliver projects and operational improvements efficiently and with confidence.
